Gulfstream V Systems Review

FLIGHT CONTROLS

How many hydraulic actuators power the elevator and what are there sources?
Two - one powered by the left system, the other right.
Is the elevator hydraulic actuators afforded hard over protection?
Yes
If a hardover condition is detected in the elevator, will hydraulic power be shutoff to both actuators or just the malfunctioning one?
Just the malfunctioning one
If a hardover condition is detected for more than _____ seconds, the affected elevator actuator will be shut off.
.5 second
How many stall barrier systems are installed on the Gulfstream G-V?
Two
You experienced a jammed elevator and used the elevator disconnect. will the stall barrier still be operational?
Yes
If you used the red power assist trigger to separate the elevator system, can you reset it?
No (unless you have the tool)
How many elevator trim tabs are there?
Two
How can you move the elevator trim tabs?
Electrically through use of the electric trim switch, or manually by the trim wheel
What must you do before using the manual elevator trim wheel?
Disengage the electric pitch trim
When is the electric pitch trim automatically engaged?
When the autopilot is engaged
Does the electric pitch trim disengage when the autopilot is disengaged?
No
What five things occur when the autopilot disengage switch is depressed (and held depressed)?
Autopilot is disengaged, pitch trim is disengaged, flaps stop moving, stab stops moving, overrides stick pusher
Must the stall barrier system be operative for takeoff?
Yes
What sources of hydraulics can power the rudder?
Left, right, and aux pump (standby rudder switch on, and airborne)
What prevents the rudder from aerodynamic overload?
Force modulating valves. Movement is limited when airspeeds increase airloads. When the hinge movement limit is reached, any further input to the pedals cannot further displace the rudder. "rudder limit" cas msg displayed
What will happen if a difference in rudder input pressure between right and left systems exceed 700-1000 PSI?
A blue "single rudder" CAS msg is displayed
Does selecting the standby rudder switch to on automatically turn on the aux pump?
Yes
You have experienced left hydraulic system failure in flight and have turned on the standby rudder system. what will happen when the nose gear wow switch is opened during landing?
Aux pressure is removed from the rudder and directed to the nosewheel steering, brakes, and flaps
Will the yaw damper work with the standby rudder system powering the rudder in flight?
Yes
True or false: Moving the rudder trim adjustment knob mechanically positions the rudder trim tab through a bungee cord system.
False. No rudder trim tab on the Gulfstream G-V. Mechanical trim outputs to the rudder actuator offset the entire surface
The yaw damper system is "fail operational". What does this mean?
If one fails the other will automatically take over
The left aileron is normally powered by which hydraulic systems?
Left and right
The right aileron is normally powered by which hydraulic systems?
Left and right
Are the ailerons afforded hardover protection?
Yes
True or false: If a hardover is detected in the left aileron, the hardover protection system will shut down just the left aileron hydraulic sources.
False. An aileron hardover will always shut down both sides, both sources. You are now in aileron manual reversion.
How many spoiler panels are on each wing?
Three
There are three spoiler panels on each wing. WHich ones are used to aid in roll response in conjunction with the ailerons?
The outboard two
The outboard two spoiler panels are used to improve roll response. In this mode, how far can they deflect?
47 plus or minus 3 degrees
The spoilers are normally powered by which hydraulic system(s)?
Left and right
The spoilers are normally powered by the left and right hydraulic systems. Will they function normally with just one system?
Yes
How can you inhibit operation of the spoiler system?
Use the spoiler control switch
How is the aileron trim tab moved?
Manually operated and mechanically moved
What prevents the aileron trim tab from freezing?
Trim tab heater, rt mn DC bus
What is the purpose of the horizontal stabilizer trim system?
Counteract the pitch movement associated with flap movement
What is another, abnormal function of the horizontal stabilizer trim system?
Provide pitch trim in the emergency stabilizer mode
On a perfectly functional airplane, what controls and synchronizes the stabilizer movement?
Flap/horizontal stabilizer control unit
What moves the horizontal stab?
Two ac motor/actuators
The flap/stab control unit has how many channels?
Two (2), each drive one of the two stab motors
The flap/stab control unit has two channels. If one fails will the other continue to provide control?
Yes
True or false: With the emer stab switch to "arm", the stab can be moved from +1.50 to -4.60 degrees regardless of flap position.
True
With emer stab switch to arm, how do you position the stab?
Using the pitch trim switch on the yoke
With the emer stab switch to "arm", how can you use elevator trim? (assuming it is available)
Disengage pitch trim and use the manual pitch trim wheel
What kind of flaps does the Gulfstream G-V have?
Fowler flaps
When you move the flap handle, what are you actually moving?
Dual rotary variable differential transformers
When you move the flap handle you are moving dual rotary variable differential transformers. These provide flap handle position information to the ________________.
Flap/stab control unit
What source of hydraulic power can operate the flaps?
Aux, ptu, left systems
On the initial cockpit inspection (before exterior) we place the emer/stab switch to arm in the process of lowering the flaps to 10 degrees. Why?
With no AC power on the aircraft, the stab motors cannot actuate the stab. When the flap handle is moved to 10, a miscompare will result causing the flap/stab control unit to stop flap movement.
When can we use flaps in icing conditions?
Takeoff, approach, and landing
How many spoiler panels are on each wing?
Three (3)
How many hydraulic spoiler actuators are there on each wing?
Two (2)
You rotate the control wheel full left. Looking at the flight control synoptic page, you notice the right spoilers have deployed slightly. is this acceptable?
Yes
When the ground spoilers deploy, how many panels actually raise?
All six, three per wing
When the ground spoilers deploy, how many degrees do they raise the spoiler panels?
55 plus or minus 4 degrees
On a full flap landing, the ground spoilers will deploy when the left and right main wow switches are in the ___________ mode or wheel spinup of greater than _____ knots.
Ground mode, 47 knots
When landing with less than full flaps, why is it necessary to turn the gpws/flap override switch to on?
To allow wheel spinup to deploy the spoilers first rather than waiting for the wow switches to be depressed and activate the spoilers. (Gets the spoilers up much sooner). Also inhibits the "too low flaps" GPWS warning.
What should you see when you depress the "gnd splr" test switch?
"No gnd spoiler" lights on windshield post, three chimes, red "gnd spoiler" cas message.
How far will the spoiler panels raise when the speedbrake handle is raised to full? (ailerons neutral)
30 plus or minus one degree for inboard panels, plus or minus 4 for the two outboard panels
With the speed brake handle full up, you right the control wheel full left. describe the positions of the spoiler panels on the left wing.
The two outboard panels will deflect to 55 degrees, the remaining panel will stay at 30
Can we takeoff with automatic ground spoilers inop?
Yes provided, anti skid is operative, 20 flaps are used, and the wing and cowl anti ice is not used.
The gust lock system only protects the flight controls in wind gusts up to ______ knots
60
Prior to engaging the gust lock you must ensure:
Hydraulic pressure is depleted by cycling the control yoke and rudder pedals
